Rising Roots 2026

The Rising Roots cooking program is a child/youth cooking program for ages 7-18 which provides urban Indigenous children/youth the chance to learn about basic cooking skills, sanitation and hygiene, and kitchen use.

This program is rooted in providing kids the chance to learn the life skills to be able to either help out in the kitchen at home, or to provide for themselves with that transition into adulthood. Rising Roots will teach kids traditional Indigenous recipes and ways of knowing around nutrition, while also taking a two-eyed seeing approach to provide insight into balanced meals, and the alternatives that can be used to be more cost-conscious with ingredients and help families navigating food insecurity.

In this program, kids will learn how to make a recipe, debrief after making, and take some of the food home as well as keep the recipe in their bundle to use in the future. The Rising Roots cooking program will allow urban Indigenous children to develop life skills and learn traditional teachings while also raising awareness around food sovereignty.
